Indigenous Australian Inspired Art
In 1986 John Busson moved to Sydney, Australia from New Zealand where he quickly became immersed in the cultures of Indigenous Australia, first with the Bundjalung people of New South Wales and later throughout the late nineteen eighties while travelling the “ Top end of Queensland” he came into contact with tribal people who taught him the use of traditional materials which he applied in his art and to further expand his understanding of their unique part of Australia and associated lore. He first began to paint in 1988 after acquiring an old Didgereedoo in Cairns which he then restored, his art developed as a direct result of this experience, and while continuing to travel throughout the eastern half of the country he come into further contact with indigenous Australians who encouraged and indeed taught John in traditional painting techniques and materials.
In 1993 John further developed his art with the Western Arrernte people at the Intjartnama Outstation, Hermannsburg Central Australia after having been invited with his travelling companions to live there while in the Northern Territory, there he honed his use of traditional materials and painting styles as well as further advancing his understanding of traditional Lore.
John still uses traditional techniques and ideas in his work to represent his experiences throughout Eastern Australia, by showing in his work for example some of the myriad insect and animal life to be found in the many different regions of Australia, including tropical waterways as well as some of the variety of life in the Central Australian Desert.
He also shows some aspects in his work of Traditional Aboriginal ideas in regards to lore, he does not however paint traditional stories, only the broader representations of the spiritual connections to the physical and universal realms that Aboriginal Australians understand.
John moved home to New Zealand in the year 2000 where he continued to paint and develop his artwork, he now lives and works in Vienna, Austria where he sells his work on a mostly private basis.
